Can A Network Marketing Business REALLY Be Run Exclusively Online?

Can A Network Marketing Business REALLY Be Run Exclusively Online?
© 2002 Elena Fawkner

For many people, the words "network marketing" or "MLM" (multi-level marketing) conjure up images of hitting up your so-called "warm market" (those two or three hundred people near and dear to you as well as those unfortunate enough to have crossed your path at some time in the distant past) and pleading, cajoling, persuading, arguing and plain pressuring them to join your program. Or organizing house parties and presentations to make your pitch to a captive audience. Or having to approach complete strangers while standing in line at the supermarket.

Any or all of these options may be unpalatable to you, and for good reason. They certainly were to me. But what if you didn't have to do any of that? What if there was a way to have people approach YOU to join your business rather than the other way around? What if you didn't have to hold face-to-face meetings at ALL? What if you didn't have to make a single approach to someone you know? Or to someone you don't? Would you think differently about network marketing then?

Well, there is such a way. Running a network marketing business using the Internet.

I've heard many people say that it's just not possible to run a network marketing business exclusively online. Well, I'm here to tell you different. Because I'm doing it and if I can do it, so can you.

Before I tell you a bit more about how a network marketing business can be run exclusively online, let me clear up a couple of possible misconceptions. First, running an online business does NOT mean creating a website and then sitting back expecting the business to run itself. You will work every bit as hard in an online network marketing business as you will in an offline network marketing business. This is just a different method, that's all.

Secondly, when I say "exclusively" online, I mean that's where your lead generation and prequalification work happens, it does NOT mean you will never have to pick up a telephone and speak to a real, live person at the other end.

OK, so what's involved in running a network marketing business online then?

The first thing to understand is that network marketing, just like Internet marketing, is a numbers game. It is for this precise reason that network marketing is IDEALLY suited to being run online. Why? Because ANY Internet business is a numbers game. Just ask anyone with a web site what their focus is when their web site is up and running. It's traffic. It's getting as many people to their web site as they can because somewhere in the range of 2% - 4% of site visitors will click on a link that, in some fashion or another, can generate revenue for the web site owner. Of those 2% - 4% of visitors who click on the link, however, only 1% or so of THEM will go on to buy after clicking on the link. Ergo, with such tiny response rates, high traffic is the name of the game. The same principle holds true for your network marketing business.

At its core, network marketing is a simple business. It's all about generating leads, qualifying those leads and then following up with those qualified leads until they take the action you want them to take (or tell you to stop) - either purchasing product from you or joining your downline as a productive distributor.

=> GENERATING LEADS

How do you generate leads? This depends on your starting position. If you already have an established web site and your network marketing business is a natural fit with that existing site, then you will not need to do too much in the way of additional lead generation for your network marketing business other than including a link to your network marketing company's web site from your existing site.

But if you don't have an existing web site, you're going to have to start from scratch. You're going to need to create a web site (on a subject matter of interest to people who would also be interested in your network marketing business opportunity or products), link to your network marketing company's site from that web site, submit your site to the search engines (and employ all the myriad other ways of driving traffic to it) and you're going to have to start
publishing an ezine (electronic newsletter) on a relevant subject and on a regular basis and build a sizeable subscriber list (again using a variety of different methods).

To generate significant traffic to your site and subscribers to your ezine is going to take time. Lots of it. Months, in fact. You should probably allow a year before it's at a size that will make much of a difference.

In the meantime, you're going to have to generate leads in other ways. The two primary effective methods are paid advertising (both for your network marketing business opportunity and the products your business promotes) and you can pay for leads.

=> QUALIFYING LEADS

Unlike the traditional, offline ways of generating leads for a network marketing business, by definition, the leads you generate online are prequalified. For example, if you're trying to generate leads offline, you're talking to everyone you can at every opportunity. You may be speaking with someone ahead of you in line at the bank or supermarket, a young mother you run into when picking up your kids from school, and any other number of people you come across in your day to day activities.

The problem is, as you have no idea whether these people are even remotely candidates for your opportunity, you can waste a LOT of time talking with people who are poor prospects for your business.

On the other hand, if you've created a web site on a topic of relevance and interest to the people who would also be interested in your network marketing opportunity, by definition your web site visitors are prequalified as, because they have sought you out, they are likely to be interested in at least learning more about your opportunity.

Placing paid advertising and paying for leads are other ways of qualifying leads. What these methods all have in common, however, is that the lead COMES TO YOU, you don't go after them. If someone makes contact with you wanting to know more about your opportunity, it's all of a sudden a LOT easier to pick up a phone and call them isn't it? Or to send them information via email if that's what you and they prefer.

=> FOLLOWING UP UNTIL YOU GET ACTION

The other big, big advantage running a network marketing business online offers is the ability to automate your follow-ups. Every time someone contacts you for information about your opportunity, add that person's email address to your list of prospects and then periodically send follow-up messages to that list. By employing autoresponders (software that allows you to send prewritten follow-up email messages to defined email addresses on a periodic basis), this process can be completely automated, leaving you free to spend your time on generating leads rather than administrative tasks.

As you can see, running a network marketing business exclusively online is not an overnight project and it requires a LOT of work, consistency, persistence and commitment. But it most certainly can be done. If you're serious about making serious money from an Internet-based business, network marketing is the way to go. I's where the big, secure money is. But to earn big, secure money, you need to invest big too. You need to invest time, money and sweat equity into building your business.

Fortunately, however, network marketing online offers one other HUGE advantage over starting any other sort of online business. An upline. If you join a network marketing program that's suited to being run online (and some aren't, by the way), AND you join up under a sponsor who is part of a team that specializes in running the business exclusively (or near enough exclusively) online, you will have at your disposal a wealth of experience, expertise and tools you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

So, think about it. If you're looking for a way to make money from your computer and you had, until now, thought network marketing wasn't for you, maybe you should think again. Network marketing coupled with Internet technology and an upline who knows what they're doing when it comes to running a business online could very well be the answer to the financial independence riddle you've been looking for. Just don't expect it to happen overnight. There are no magic wands in this business just as there aren't anywhere else.

Are You a One-Night Stand?

Are You a One-Night Stand?
by Chris Zavadowski

I'm shocked at how 'stupid' some business owners are. They'll piss and moan that times are tough, making money is hard, blah blah blah. (All a bunch of hot air, by the way).
Now, because YOU are taking the time to read this article, that's probably not you, but I wanted to raise your awareness about something of critical importance to your MLM business's success.

However, I'm jumping ahead. Let me tell how this all came about...

You see, I finally decided to hire a maid service. (I absolutely hate cleaning and frankly, considering I don't get paid to do it, spending hours cleaning is a waste of time. Especially when you could be using that time to learn a new skill, spend time with family, build your business or do something you truly love).

In Northern Virginia, there are the "big 3" of cleaning services. All locally-owned franchises (not much different than an independent business owner in network marketing). I decided to "shop around" a little before hiring a service, so I made calls to all three.

This is where the stupidity begins...

Service #1 never answered the phone. Never returned the phone call. So the choice there was easy. "You're the weakest link. Goodbye."

Service #2 booked an appointment. He called the day of the appointment to confirm. And didn't even show up on time. After an hour of my time wasted, I called the owner to cancel the appointment and told him not to bother coming. (Not surprisingly, no one even answered the phone when I called.)

Service #3 actually answered the phone...booked an appointment...and -- gasp -- showed up (albeit 15 minutes LATE). But get this. The owner didn't even have testimonials to share with me. He was shocked when I asked for references! (If he wasn't standing right in front of me, I probably would have been banging my head on the desk.)

Eventually, after practically helping him with his sales presentation, I decided to try out #3. Not necessarily because he had the best service - but because he was the only dang one to show up (a big lesson there!).

No wonder people can't stay in business. Especially when it takes so much effort to give them money. Sadly, my "maid" story above is echoed in thousands upon thousands of businesses today. (I bet you have your own version of it yourself.)

With that said, here's what my story has to do with your business. Hopefully you've realized the four important business lessons in the story above, but I want to draw your attention to the absolute biggest one...

Follow-up.

Now it might seem like a no-brainer, but half the battle is just following up with your prospects. Getting them to the next meeting. The next exposure. Staying on their radar screen.

Or, in many cases, just contacting people who respond to your ads. You realize there probably wouldn't be nearly as many lead companies around if everyone actually called the leads they purchased? Most distributors leave their leads high and dry.

All the businesses I called above could have cared less about a relationship with their customers. And between you, me and the web browser, I'll bet the one service I hired won't EVER even ask me for a single referral. (Hopefully you aren't making that same mistake in your business!).

The bottome line is: Your business, MLM or otherwise, MUST be about building relationships. If it's a one-night stand with a "churn and burn" philosophy, you won't be in business very long. You'll be working your butt off just to keep your head above water.

So roll up your sleeves. Be smart, not stupid.

Got a new downline member? Follow up with him. Don't just leave him out to dry.

Got a new customer? Send her a "welcome" packet. Follow up in two months. Ask for referrals. Send a birthday note. Build a relationship.

Remember, if you are the one person willing to put in just a tad bit more work - you'll be rewarded ten times over!

Seven Essential Tips to Your Success in Network Marketing

Seven Essential Tips to Your Success in Network Marketing

Several people join Network Marketing in search for financial freedom, a better quality of life, and the dream of getting out of the rat race. Each and every year thousands of people join and are out of the business within a year. Why do 75% of the people who join Network Marketing quit within their first year? Let me share with you Seven Essential Tips to Your Success in Network Marketing that will assist you in realizing your dreams:

1. Train yourself, teach others second.

Doctors go to medical school and lawyers go to law school. Why do most people who join a Network marketing company believe they are born with the skill sets that will earn them a six-figure income? Contrary to what some people may have told you, you must invest in yourself by listening to audios, reading self-development books, and attending training conferences. Don't make the mistake of not getting properly trained!!.

2. Treat it as a business, not a hobby!

According to Cambridge Dictionary, the definition of a Business is, the activity of buying and selling goods or services. Definition Hobby, an activity that someone does for pleasure when they are not working. Now, which definition is most suited for Network Marketing? I hope you chose Business. However, most people who join a Network Marketing company treat it as a hobby. They work the business when they feel like it, invest in training when they feel like it, and talk to prospects when they feel like it. And before you know it, they are out of the Business because the feel like it. Treat Network Marketing as a business.

3. Create a highly duplicable system

McDonald's is one of the largest and most successful hamburger franchises in history. Now most of us know that we could probably make a better hamburger than McDonald's. So what is the key to their success? A highly duplicable system. McDonald's has created a system that allows the average person to operate effectively. In Network Marketing, if you are not able to show others how to duplicate what you do, there is a good possibility that you will struggle.

4. Never Give Up

"No man is ever whipped, until he quits in is his own mind." Napoleon Hill. Do you recall the movie, Frankie and Johnny with Michelle Pieffer and Al Pacino. During this movie, Johnny was madly in love with Frankie (Michelle Pieffer). Unfortunately, these feelings were not mutual. To make a long story short, Johnny eventually won Frankie's heart through persistence and Never giving up! In the MLM industry, you have to be like Johnny. You have to keep moving on, even when you don't feel like it. Never give up!!

5. If you don't know where you are going any road will lead you there

According to success tip # 2, this is a business, and you must treat it as so. As you are aware, any business normally has a business plan. This is no different in Network Marketing. Write down your goals, how many people you want to sponsor, how much income that you want to make, how many products that you want to sell, etc. The key is to establish a plan and stick to it. But be realistic in your goals and understand that this is a marathon, not a sprint.

6. Support your Downline

Lets face it, we are in this business to make money and the more training and support that you give to your downline, the better they will perform for you. Your job is to assist those you sponsor and help them recruit others so that there experience in Network Marketing is good and they make money. Just always remember, you can get anything in life you want, if you help others get what they want.

7. A Burning Desire

According to Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, the starting point of all achievement is DESIRE. I remember a 1998 playoff game with the Chicago Bulls vs. the Utah Jazz. Seconds left in the game and Michael Jordan is ill. He is so ill, that Scottie Pippen must assist him off the court during time outs. During this pivotal game, Michael Jordan ill with the flu, and can barely stand up, literally willed his team to victory with a last second heroic shot. Some may say lucky, and some may say skill, but I call it DESIRE! If you don't have it, get it...it could make the difference between Dollars and Cents!

The Concept of The Funded Proposal

The Concept of The Funded Proposal
by Alex Booth

How much money does it take to build a large Network Marketing business? We have all heard that a Network Marketing business costs much less to work than any conventional business with similar potential. That is certainly true if you want to build a small organization.

No doubt, personal contact is the least costly way to build a small Network Marketing business. However, the "just get 5 who get 5" paradigm obviously needs some improvementswith an industry that boasts of a 95% failure rate.

If you have your sights set on building a large income through Network Marketing, direct mail may be your method of choice. If you're not careful, direct mail can be a very expensive undertaking. If you're not using a "Funded Proposal"expect to spend thousands for a very small return.

The "Funded Proposal", as referred to in the March, 1996 issue of Upline Journal, offers valuable information to your potential prospects. Namely, information about "How to succeed in Network Marketing." With such a high industry failure rate, networkers are starving for a better system. They are willing to pay good money for practical information about building their Network Marketing business.

Doesn't your company's leadership have a training tape, book or manual that they sell? Isn't that what the "heavy hitters" and "marketing gurus" in the industry are doing? Aren't they selling generic information and then backending prospects into their company? Aren't they erasing their advertising costs by selling information?

Tony Robins? Don LePre? Brad Richdale? "Big Al"? John Fogg? Buy any of their how-to training products and you'll then be introduced to their "back end". The "hook"...their initial "offer" is only meant to pay for the ads.

Pop Quiz: What Famous & Rich Mail Order People Do MLM On The Side? Ever hear of Randy Gage, Jeffery Lant, Len Clements, Kevin Trudeu, Big Al, John Fogg, Oleg Geller, Art Meaken, Linda Bruton, Tony Little, Don Falia, Brian Tracy, Robert Allen, Don Mikrut, James Rensvold, Dexter Yeager, John Kalench, Joe Pantano, Richard Dicks and Bill Gouldd? Are YOU having a breakthrough yet?

So, how does the average Joe Networker apply the "Funded Proposal" technique?

HERE IS THE KEY

When you use a "Funded Proposal" approach you need to offer "generic" information that will appeal to almost everyone in Network Marketing. There is an abundance of generic MLM "how to" information out there for you to use. If you are so inclined, there are even books that will teach you how to create your own information products.

Whether you create your own or use someone else's generic information, the "Funded Proposal" can give you and your downline a virtually unlimited source of highly qualified prospects. And best of all, they don't cost a lot of money to acquire! With a "Funded Proposal", you may even make a profit from your recruiting efforts this year.

Confession of A Network Marketing FAILURE!

Confession of A Network Marketing FAILURE!
Copyright 2005 by Willie Crawford

When I first noticed network marketing, or multi-level
marketing (MLM), I ignored it. That's because I considered
myself an "Internet marketer" and Internet marketers
seemed to view network marketing as beneath them. They
seemed to view Internet marketing as more honorable.

So, I spent many years as an Internet marketer, not
taking a serious look at network marketing. When a close
friend, whose judgement I trusted, got me to take a serious
look at a network marketing business he was in, I was
shocked. It was a very powerful business model, offered
a great product, and I was sold. Things really took off
for me!

Within 3 months of getting involved in network marketing
with this company... with a very good product, an excellent
compensation plan, and great training, I was the number
ONE recruiter in the entire company.

How did I do so well so fast? I used the skills I had
learned as an Internet marketer to become a recruiting
machine. You see, I'm a pretty good copywriter, an
excellent salesperson, and understand marketing. So I
just broke out my Internet marketing big guns. I did
the things I'd learned over a 7-year period in Internet
marketing, and that made me unstoppable.

Despite all that, I FAILED miserably. I say that because
my downline members weren't doing nearly as well as I
was. Yes, they had access to the same tools and training
that I did. I even gave them permission to use the tools
I created (articles, funnel websites, etc.). However,
they weren't as effective as I was and it's because my
unique experiences in Internet marketing was something I
couldn't transfer to them.

Two mentors had to "whack me up side the head" to get me
to see what I was doing wrong. One mentor had built a
downline of 274,000. He said, "You can't be a big success
in this industry, unless what you do is duplicable by
everyone in your downline." Another mentor, earning over
$80,000 per month in residual income, pointed out that
my personal statistics don't matter. What matters is
the statistics of those I recruit. How fast are they
building their organizations.

Mentors like these, and my upline, taught me that the secret
to network marketing success is building an organization
of people who are building their organizations. You have
to use leverage and duplication!

Once this sank in, and I began doing that, I was back on
the road to becoming one of the top network marketers in
the entire country. It's only a matter of time :-)

A few other lessons that I learned the hard way...

1) You need a product that it's easy for people to
understand and see the need for. Products that people
are already consuming are ideal.

2) You need a well-written website that immediately
explains both the product and the income opportunity.
Websites that explain things in a roundabout way will
lose most of your visitors. They simply won't stick
around trying to figure out what the site is all about.

3) You need a product that isn't readily available in
the local stores for a comparable price.

4) You need to actually interview potential downline
members. Treat it like you're hiring someone in a
regular job, and don't act out of desperation... Don't
"hire" everyone that expresses an interest. Find
out why the person wants to be in the business and
only recruit those with strong motivation. Discover
their "reason why" and use that to assess whether or
not you should spend time working with this person as
a part of your organization.

5) You don't really need a huge downline. You just need
a handful of producers who then go out and find other
producers. If you are a recruiting machine, as I first
was, you'll sign up too many people who just aren't willing
to do the work.

6) Don't tell people that it's "easy." Instead, let
them know that if they want real success, they will have
to put in the work. Show them that others are very
successful doing exactly what they'll be taught to do
but don't mislead them into thinking everything will
magically be done for them.

As a network marketer, it's critical that you not only
learn from your company and upline, but that you also
learn from other network marketers. Read the books,
listen to the tapes, and subscribe to the newsletters.
Learn as much as you can about the industry. This will
save you from making many costly mistakes. It will
keep you from having to fail before getting on the path
to success. Others, like me, are doing very well in
this industry, and are all too happy to teach you.
